Greater
Spokane Substance Abuse Council's (GSSAC) Prevention Center
In the fall of 1982, GSSAC was established as a
community-organizing effort by local policymakers and citizens to take a
stand against drugs and violence. Certified
as an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with registered
Articles of Incorporation and a 15-member Policy Board of Directors in
July of 1983, the coalition worked together to coordinate efforts to
reduce the impact of alcohol and drug abuse on the community.
Today, GSSAC’s Prevention Center is home to several
efforts working toward the prevention of substance abuse, violence, and
impaired driving. These
programs strive to promote the desire, knowledge, and skills to make
positive choices while also working to unite and support the community
with the common goal of creating a community-wide environment that
fosters positive attitudes and behaviors.
The
Greater Spokane Substance Abuse Council's (GSSAC) Prevention Center's
mission is to reduce substance abuse and
violence in Spokane County.
With this
goal in mind, GSSAC strives to encourage,
facilitate, initiate, and assist all people,
groups, and organizations in finding solutions
to alcohol, tobacco, and
other drug abuse.
The primary
purpose of the Center is to have a strong collaborative
coalition with broad
and
diverse community representation that promotes
primary community-wide substance abuse
and violence prevention and
reduction strategies.
GSSAC’s
Prevention Center Staff’s Vision Statement:
The vision of the GSSAC Prevention Center
Staff is to support the mission
of the Prevention Center by providing substance abuse and violence
outreach services, fostering collaboration, raising awareness, and
enhancing the efforts of existing community programs, as well as
administering Center support services in a cost-effective and morally
responsible manner for the enrichment of the youth,
families, and community members of Spokane County and, as appropriate,
throughout the state of Washington.
GSSAC's
Prevention Center is funded through state and federal grants, fee based
programs, and
generous
community support.
