10 hour class
Minors In Prevention Program Format:
Session #1 — 6:00pm–9:30pm — Holy
Family Hospital (N. 5633 Lidgerwood)
Mentor/Student:
Each student will
be “teamed” with a community volunteer who will guide them
through the program, answer questions, assist in the process,
and spend quality time with them during both classroom sessions.
Local
Speaking Groups: Speakers
with personal experiences focusing on injuries and deaths caused
by drug/alcohol/poor choice situations.
Local Law Enforcement: Discussion of laws, how alcohol impairs the body, and personal
stories that involve death notifications.
Victim/Survivor: The
reality of living with the consequences of choices, including
alcohol/drug-related traffic crashes.
Medical
Examiner’s Presentation and Tour of the Morgue: Information regarding deaths caused by alcohol/drugs, the
autopsy process, and a guided tour of the morgue.
Session #2 — Two hours — On-site
Hospital and ER Visit: Students,
ages 13–17, will be assigned and complete a 2-hour visit on a
Friday or Saturday night at Deaconess Medical Center or Sacred
Heart Medical Center. The volunteer mentor will guide/supervise
the students at all times. Students will observe emergency,
trauma, and intensive care units; interact with hospital staff
and patients; perform rehabilitation exercises in a wheelchair;
and learn about employment opportunities available in the
medical field.
Geiger
Corrections Center Visit:
Students, ages 18–20 at the time of entering the
Minors In Prevention program, will be assigned and complete a
2-hour visit at Geiger Corrections Center. The mentor and
Corrections staff will guide/supervise the students at all
times. They will be given a tour of both the men’s and
women’s facilities for an up-close look at what life while
incarcerated is really like.
Session #3 — 6:00pm–9:30pm — Holy
Family Hospital (N. 5633 Lidgerwood)
Final
Impact: Survivor
stories and decision-making skills.
Each student will bring a pre-assigned 500-word essay
discussing his/her experience in the MIP program to this final
session.
